Antimicrobial resistance: a health challenge

Summarizing the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18–24 November), we once again emphasize that Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) remains one of the most pressing global public health challenges. It is truly a “Silent Pandemic,” and without effective action it threatens to become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Following this year’s theme — “Act now: Protect our present, safeguard our future” — we must ensure that future generations do not lose access to effective treatments and remain protected against infectious diseases of our time. The inappropriate and irrational use of antimicrobials in medicine, veterinary practice, and agriculture significantly contributes to the rise and spread of resistant microorganisms, making the treatment of common infections increasingly ineffective. It is essential to: Avoid taking antimicrobials without medical advice: incorrect drug selection may cause more harm than benefit. Always complete the full prescribed course of treatment: premature discontinuation contributes to the development of resistance. Remember that antimicrobials are ineffective against viruses: they play no role in the management of influenza, acute respiratory infections, or COVID-19. Therefore, by uniting around the One Health approach, we can collectively prevent the risks posed by the growing wave of antimicrobial resistance.
