September 18 is HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day

In some countries, September 18 is observed as HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day.

This day is a reminder that, thanks to advances in medicine, people living with HIV today can live longer and healthier lives. According to the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCI), as of the end of June 2025, more than 4,000 individuals in Armenia are receiving antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, over 500 of whom are aged 60 and above.

At the same time, it is important to emphasize that aging brings new challenges—both medical and social.

Older people living with HIV often face stigma, isolation, or difficulties in accessing healthcare services. It is our collective responsibility to ensure their full participation in community life.

This day reminds us that HIV is not only a healthcare issue—it is also a matter of human rights and compassion. Together, we must raise awareness and create an environment where older people living with HIV feel safe, respected, and valued.

Let us use this day to reaffirm our commitment: to provide care without discrimination, to spread knowledge without fear, and to build a society where neither age nor HIV status ever limits a person’s right to live a full and dignified life.
